Local BSA Unit Federal Reporting Reqiurements Regarding IRS Form 990-N
As you may know, the IRS has introduced a new, abbreviated filing for small tax-exempt organizations with annual gross receipts of less than $25,000: Form 990-N. The Boy Scouts of America national office has received questions about whether this new filing applies to Cub Scout packs, Boy Scout troops, Venturing crews, and other units, and has consulted the IRS and outside counsel about it.

In their opinion, most Scout units do not have to file the new Form 990-N. Your unit filing requirements will likely remain unchanged from last year. For most units no filing is required.

Nalgene Bottle Recall
Nalgene Nunc International has directed vendors to withdraw Nalgene® water bottles made with bisphenol A from sale.

Accordingly, Boy Scouts of America’s National Supply Group is immediately withdrawing all Nalgene ® brand water bottles from sale at Scout Shops, online, and through its retailers across the country.

Safety is our top priority. Any parent or consumer who has previously purchased Nalgene® bottles at our stores should stop using the product and wait until arrangements are made by Nalgene® to receive an alternate product.

Change to Eagle Application
The Eagle Scout Rank Application has been revised. The new version must be used as of May 1st. You can get a copy of the new application here. The only change is that Requirement 5 now asks for the grand total of hours worked on the project.

To help Scouts track the hours worked, and to encourage reporting of service hours, the Patriots' Path Council Advancement Committee will include a volunteer hours log in future copies of Trail to Eagle. It instructs Scouts to include a certificate from the Good Turn for America website in their final report.

Your Troop's advancement chair can report the hours on www.goodturnforamerica.org using the same access number that is used for Internet Advancement. By reporting these hours, and the hours your Troop spends on community service aside from Eagle projects, you help keep our communities informed about Scouting's commitment to service.

Technical Difficulties
The Internet Re-Chartering and Advancement systems are experiencing technical difficulties. National is aware of the problems and is working to correct the situation. We will post information as accessibility becomes available.
